As Portugal takes center stage at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Portuguese Trade & Investment Agency (AICEP) is leading a comprehensive economic program designed to showcase Portugal as a strategic partner in innovation, sustainability, and investment opportunities within the Japanese market and beyond.

This initiative aligns with Portugal’s broader international strategy to boost bilateral economic relations with Japan, while highlighting Portugal’s growing leadership in cutting-edge sectors such as automotive technology, green energy, and bicycle manufacturing.

One of the flagship activities under this economic program was the Mobility Seminar held on May 22, 2025, at the Portuguese Embassy in Tokyo. The seminar focused on Portugal’s dynamic role in the transformation of Europe’s mobility sector, spotlighting strategic investment opportunities in automotive assembly, component manufacturing, and the burgeoning two-wheel market.

The event brought together over 50 participants, including senior executives and decision-makers from leading Japanese corporations such as Shimano, Panasonic Automotive, SoftBank, Toyota, Teijin, Hino Motors, AESC, Honda, and Yamaha, underscoring the high level of industry engagement.

Representatives from Portugal’s key national clusters in electrification and decarbonization of mobility—MOBINOV and BIKINNOV (Bike Value Innovation Centre Association)—presented Portugal’s capabilities in engineering, software development, and sustainable innovation. Their presentations detailed how Portugal is emerging as a European hub for mobility solutions, combining advanced manufacturing with research-driven development.

A senior representative from Woven by Toyota, the technology subsidiary dedicated to next-generation mobility, also participated, highlighting avenues for collaboration between Portuguese and Japanese enterprises.

Alongside AICEP representatives Miguel Malheiro Garcia (Director in Tokyo) and Mónica Moreira (Commercial Director), and Portuguese Ambassador to Japan Jerónimo Gilberto, the seminar reinforced Portugal’s strategic vision to expand its presence in the Asian market.

Portugal is internationally recognized for its advances in renewable energy production, including wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, which contribute significantly to the country’s sustainable economic development.

The nation’s bicycle manufacturing sector is also expanding rapidly, combining traditional craftsmanship with innovation to produce high-quality products that meet growing global demand for sustainable transport options. This development aligns closely with European Union goals for climate-neutral mobility and urban transport transformation.

By showcasing these sectors at Expo 2025 Osaka, Portugal is enhancing its visibility in Asia, creating pathways for foreign direct investment, and fostering bilateral technology and trade partnerships.

The Portugal Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka has attracted over 400,000 visitors since opening, serving as a dynamic platform for cultural exchange, business networking, and promotion of Portuguese innovation and sustainability values.

The pavilion’s themes emphasize Portugal’s rich heritage, natural beauty, and technological advancements, presenting a holistic image of the country to the international community.

Upcoming seminars planned at the pavilion further reinforce the country’s commitment to economic diversification and sustainable growth:

These events showcase Portugal’s strategic sectors and invite Japanese and global investors to explore collaborative opportunities.

Portugal’s participation in Expo 2025 Osaka and associated economic programs receive robust support from governmental bodies including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transition.

These ministries coordinate efforts to promote Portugal internationally, attract sustainable investment, and foster innovation ecosystems in alignment with the country’s national development strategies.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also engage actively in strengthening Japan-Portugal relations, emphasizing trade, technology transfer, and sustainability cooperation.

Portugal’s approach at Expo 2025 Osaka demonstrates the increasing role of sustainable innovation as a foundation for economic growth and international partnerships. By integrating environmental care and technological advancement, Portugal is carving a distinctive niche in the global economy.

AICEP’s strategic economic program at the Expo exemplifies this, fostering dialogue between Portuguese and Japanese companies, investors, and policymakers to build a resilient and sustainable future.
