Liwonde National Park, one of Malawi’s premier wildlife reserves, is undergoing significant enhancements in 2024 and 2025.
Recognized for its conservation efforts, the park remains a cornerstone of Malawi’s tourism, further bolstered by the country’s inclusion in ABTA’s Destinations to Watch in 2025.
Backed by initiatives from the Malawi Department of Tourism and African Parks, these developments reinforce Malawi’s reputation as a top eco-tourism destination.
Mvuu Camp & Lodge, operated by Central African Wilderness Safaris, introduced key upgrades in 2024 to enhance guest experiences.
The underground wildlife hide, a major attraction for photographers, was fully reconstructed, offering superior game-viewing opportunities.
Additionally, the lodge acquired two new safari vehicles and launched panoramic-view photographic boats for immersive wildlife exploration.
Sustainability has been central to Mvuu’s improvements, with a complete transition to solar power, reducing its environmental footprint.
The establishment of a new vegetable garden supports a farm-to-table dining approach, while a newly appointed Head Chef, Kezias, has revitalized the culinary experience. To further improve service and community engagement, a Community and Standards Manager has joined the team.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mvuu Camp plans to renovate its Education Centre to expand conservation education programs.
A new dining and stargazing deck at Mvuu Lodge will enhance guest experiences, alongside fleet expansions with four additional safari vehicles.
A second vegetable garden will be developed to strengthen sustainability efforts.
Partnerships with charitable organizations will also increase educational opportunities for children in surrounding communities.
Kuthengo Camp, managed by Robin Pope Safaris, made significant additions in 2024 to improve guest experiences. Two new wooden boats were introduced to enhance water-based safaris, and an upgraded safari vehicle was added for land excursions.
In 2025, Kuthengo will expand its capacity with an additional guest tent, bringing the total to five for a more intimate yet spacious stay.
A curated solo travellers’ departure trip, launching in June 2025, will provide independent travellers with a structured, immersive safari experience in Malawi.
African Parks, which manages Liwonde National Park in partnership with Malawi’s Department of National Parks and Wildlife, has overseen critical accommodation upgrades.
Chinguni House, a self-catering lodge overlooking the Shire River, underwent a full renovation, offering five luxury bedrooms for up to ten guests.
The facility now includes an in-house chef service, providing a high-end yet homely stay.
Following the Chinguni upgrades, renovations are underway at Chimwala Bush Camp’s safari tents.
Expected to be completed by June 2025, the refreshed camp will offer enhanced accommodations while maintaining its commitment to sustainability and eco-tourism.
These developments highlight Liwonde National Park’s continued dedication to conservation, community engagement, and exceptional wildlife experiences.
With government-backed conservation efforts and private sector investments, Malawi is cementing itself as a must-visit destination for eco-conscious travellers in Africa.
