The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced that its 82nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June 2026, with LATAM Airlines Group as the host. This significant event marks a return to South America for IATA after more than two decades, with the previous AGM on the continent held in Rio in 1999.

IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming event, noting the importance of returning to one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets.

He highlighted the potential for aviation to serve as a strategic force in fostering social and economic prosperity in South America, a region with increasing global aviation significance.

Roberto Alvo, CEO of LATAM Airlines Group, conveyed pride in hosting the prestigious aviation gathering in Brazil.

He also praised Rio de Janeiro’s allure, citing its spectacular beauty and renowned hospitality, ensuring a memorable experience for attendees. LATAM’s role as host reflects its position as the leading airline group in South America, operating flights to 153 destinations in 27 countries.

In 2024, LATAM transported a record 82 million passengers, underscoring its growth trajectory within the competitive global aviation market. The group has also prioritized fleet modernization and environmental sustainability, embracing newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with the global aviation industry’s net-zero goals.

The upcoming IATA AGM will provide a platform for LATAM and other global airlines to exchange insights and develop strategies to enhance the sustainability and resilience of air travel.

Hosting the AGM in Rio de Janeiro also honors Brazil’s deep-rooted history in aviation. The country is home to Alberto Santos-Dumont, often regarded as one of the fathers of powered flight. His pioneering flight in 1906 is celebrated as a landmark achievement, influencing aviation not only in Latin America but worldwide.

Brazil’s commitment to aviation development has been reflected through investments in airport infrastructure, airline growth, and fostering an environment conducive to air travel innovation.

Brazil has a legacy of hosting key IATA events, having welcomed the AGM to:

The 2026 AGM in Rio continues this tradition, emphasizing Brazil’s strategic importance in global aviation.

The AGM is the premier annual event where airline CEOs, industry experts, government officials, and regulators converge to discuss challenges, innovations, and policies shaping global aviation. The gathering fosters collaboration on critical issues such as:

With Rio hosting, the event will also shine a spotlight on the specific opportunities and challenges faced by South American aviation markets, including regional connectivity, infrastructure development, and market liberalization.

The AGM is expected to generate significant economic activity for Rio and Brazil, attracting hundreds of delegates from the global aviation ecosystem. The event will boost the hospitality, transport, and service sectors and promote Rio’s image as a world-class destination for business and tourism.

Brazil’s Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation Authority have expressed strong support for hosting the event, viewing it as a catalyst for enhanced international cooperation and investment in the region’s aviation infrastructure.

The 82nd IATA AGM scheduled for June 2026 presents an unparalleled opportunity to celebrate the progress made in the global aviation sector while setting ambitious goals for the future. For LATAM Airlines, Brazil, and South America, the event marks a reaffirmation of their growing importance on the global aviation stage.

As airlines worldwide strive for innovation and sustainability, the AGM will be a crucial forum for shaping policies that benefit passengers, businesses, and the environment alike.
