Malta’s tourism sector reached new heights in 2024, welcoming a record-breaking 3.56 million inbound tourists. According to the National Statistics Office, arrivals surged by 19.5% compared to the previous year, placing Malta among the fastest-growing destinations in Europe and the Southern Mediterranean.
Total visitor expenditure climbed by 23.1%, increasing from €2.7 billion in 2023 to €3.3 billion in 2024. The per capita expenditure stood at €924, reflecting a shift towards higher-value tourism. The data, released at the Malta National Tourism Conference 2025, underscores the country’s strong performance in the international travel market.
Malta’s tourism sector outperformed regional competitors such as Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, and Croatia. While overall European travel saw only a 5% increase in 2024 compared to 2023, Malta’s double-digit expansion highlights its resilience and growing appeal.
UN Tourism data also confirmed that Malta recorded the highest growth rate in tourism receipts among Southern Mediterranean destinations. The country saw a 22% rise in export revenue from tourism, reinforcing the sector’s economic significance.
Most of Malta’s top 15 inbound markets experienced substantial growth. Poland emerged as the fastest-growing source market, with arrivals increasing by 58.3%, followed by Hungary (+35.6%), the Netherlands (+34.0%), and the United Kingdom (+30.6%). The UK regained its position as Malta’s largest inbound market, surpassing Italy.
Despite the growth in arrivals, the average length of stay declined from 6.8 nights in 2023 to 6.4 nights in 2024. Analysts attribute this trend to increased flight connectivity, enabling visitors to opt for shorter but more frequent trips.
The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) emphasized that the impressive growth reflects the country’s strategic vision, which prioritizes sustainable tourism development and high-value visitors. The industry’s continued expansion ensures a balanced distribution of travelers throughout the year, reducing the pressure on peak travel seasons.
The MTA reiterated its commitment to further enhancing Malta’s tourism infrastructure, diversifying offerings, and implementing strategies that sustain long-term economic benefits. The organization aims to maintain momentum by leveraging emerging travel trends, strengthening airline partnerships, and promoting cultural tourism.
Tourist guest-nights in Malta reached nearly 23 million in 2024, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. The influx of visitors and their increased spending levels contributed significantly to job creation, business growth, and overall economic development.
Industry experts predict that Malta’s tourism sector will continue to thrive, driven by targeted marketing campaigns, expanded air connectivity, and a diverse range of travel experiences catering to various market segments.
As the global tourism industry navigates evolving consumer preferences, Malta’s record-breaking performance underscores its adaptability and resilience. With strategic investments and a strong policy framework, the nation remains well-positioned to sustain its upward trajectory in the international travel landscape.
