Emirates and Air Mauritius Renew Strategic Partnership to Boost Codeshare and Connectivity

Accommodation Dubai introduces

Emirates and Air Mauritius have reaffirmed their enduring partnership through the renewal of a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), reinforcing their collaboration on codeshare flights, frequent flyer programmes, and cargo handling services. This strategic alliance, first formalized in 2003, has played a pivotal role in enhancing air connectivity between Mauritius and the world, facilitating seamless travel for passengers and bolstering the island nation’s tourism economy.

The renewed MoU was officially signed in Mauritius, underscoring both airlines’ commitment to expanding their mutual cooperation beyond their primary gateways. Since Emirates launched flights to Mauritius in 2002, the partnership has evolved significantly, with an enhanced codeshare agreement put in place in 2013 to expand route coverage and offer customers greater flexibility and travel options.

The renewed strategic partnership offers a host of benefits for travelers on both carriers. Passengers can enjoy seamless connectivity with the convenience of using a single ticket across select routes operated by both airlines. This includes the ability to earn and redeem frequent flyer miles on either airline’s loyalty programmes, providing greater rewards and incentives for loyal customers.

Kazim also highlighted the broader economic impact of the partnership, noting that it has contributed significantly to building a strong and sustainable tourism economy in Mauritius. Emirates’ extensive global network connects Mauritius to more than 128 destinations worldwide, fostering tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

For Air Mauritius, the renewal marks a critical milestone in strengthening ties with one of the world’s leading airlines. Kremchand (Kishore) Beegoo, Chairman of Air Mauritius, described Emirates as a key strategic partner and expressed optimism about the expanded cooperation.

The agreement enhances codeshare opportunities on routes extending beyond the main gateways, and cooperation will continue to cover frequent flyer programmes and cargo handling, further integrating the two carriers’ services.

Under the renewed partnership, Air Mauritius will place its code on Emirates-operated flights to key cities including Cairo, Colombo, Karachi, Dammam, Jeddah, and Riyadh. Conversely, Emirates will place its code on Air Mauritius services on the Mauritius – Antananarivo route. This arrangement allows both airlines to market and sell seats on a wider range of routes, significantly expanding travel options for customers.

Additionally, Air Mauritius can sell seats to points across Emirates’ entire network on an interline basis, enhancing the reach of both airlines and providing passengers with more destinations, connections, and scheduling flexibility.

Since Emirates commenced operations to Mauritius, the airline has played an important role in promoting the island on the global stage while complementing the national carrier’s activities. Emirates’ services have carried over 8.8 million passengers and transported more than 126,000 tonnes of cargo to and from Mauritius, contributing substantially to the island’s economy.

According to official figures, the partnership generates approximately USD 900 million in annual economic benefits for Mauritius. This includes USD 119 million in direct contributions from Emirates’ 14 weekly passenger flights, USD 264 million in tourism receipts, and USD 530 million in tourism-related spending throughout the country.

Emirates’ operations have not only boosted tourism but also supported employment, directly and indirectly creating around 3,600 jobs in Mauritius. These roles span airport services, hospitality, transportation, and related sectors, helping to foster sustainable economic development in the island nation.

Emirates operates 14 flights per week between Dubai and Mauritius, all serviced by the airline’s flagship Airbus A380 aircraft. Notably, Emirates is the only carrier offering the iconic double-decker aircraft on this route, and uniquely provides First Class cabins, elevating the luxury travel experience to and from Mauritius.

The Dubai-Mauritius route is a vital link between the Indian Ocean island and global markets, supported by Emirates’ comprehensive network that spans six continents. This connectivity not only supports tourism but also facilitates trade, business, and cultural exchanges, strengthening Mauritius’ position as a hub in the region.

Mauritius has long been a popular tourist destination, renowned for its pristine beaches, diverse culture, and natural beauty. The Mauritian government’s Ministry of Tourism emphasizes the sector’s critical role in the island’s economy, with strategic plans aimed at sustainable tourism growth and enhancing global connectivity.

According to Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority and government sources, increasing air connectivity is a priority to attract visitors from emerging markets while maintaining strong ties with traditional European and African tourism sources.

The renewed Emirates-Air Mauritius partnership aligns perfectly with these national priorities, supporting the island’s tourism vision and economic development goals.

Looking ahead, both airlines have committed to further strengthening their collaboration, exploring new avenues for cooperation in passenger services, cargo, and loyalty programmes. The partnership’s longevity—now spanning over two decades—reflects the mutual benefits and shared vision of promoting Mauritius as a premier global destination.

This alliance also positions both airlines to better navigate the evolving aviation landscape, adapting to changing passenger demands, sustainability goals, and technological advancements.

The sustained success of this partnership is underpinned by strong support from government agencies and aviation authorities in both Mauritius and the United Arab Emirates. Close cooperation ensures regulatory compliance, safety standards, and alignment with national tourism strategies.

Relevant authorities include the Mauritius Civil Aviation Department, the Ministry of Tourism and Leisure, and the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority. These bodies facilitate a stable operating environment conducive to growth and innovation in the aviation sector.

The renewal of the Emirates-Air Mauritius partnership represents a significant step forward in enhancing air connectivity, supporting sustainable tourism, and delivering economic benefits to Mauritius. With expanded codeshare routes, enhanced frequent flyer cooperation, and integrated cargo services, both airlines are well-positioned to offer customers greater travel flexibility and exceptional service.

This enduring alliance not only enriches passenger experiences but also drives tangible socio-economic benefits for Mauritius, strengthening its status as a global tourism hotspot and regional aviation hub.
